Notes for January 20

Check out Christine's notes....

  • Donna - Video Conferencing Services  - Donna does ALL video-conferencings support throughout the world

Skip:  alaska.edu  - Video Chat with Google Mail better than skype one-to-one....

mail.google.com/a/alaska.edu - Google Chat very stable and works well....

To do more - Vidyo conference chatting only for once in awhile - not for every week yet (go to H.323 system for more regular video conferencing)....email Donna first video@alaska.edu for conference rooms for up to 10 people - only folks with video can participate in these conference rooms - no audio-only.  Students will be required to have webcams to be sure they can participate.

Open to the world - not just alaska.edu domain

          Reserve in advance

Difference between this and skype - Skype not as stable - google video more stable

          Minimum specs: Intel macs, updated

Use a good headset - $40 and up....

Google video - does it work for rural??  Unknown now....

H.323 system? - This will allow folks outside the UA system can participate in video-conferencing -  reservation system again.

UA owns actual hardware to run these conferences so that signals aren't bouncing all over the world.

School districts may or may not allow it over their networks - check before depending on it.

  • Martin Scott "Scotty" and Chris Beks Blackboard

What's new?

  • Skip:  Video cameras - 2 new cameras

Podcasting - Email Gary for password and username √ Blog automatically created as place to find podcasts. Use podcast capture - must be connected to UAF network to publish Compliance needed with Board of Regents policy regarding publication - form will be needed for folks (guest speakers), a media release, to be sure we have permission to publish on iTunes.

UAF will soon have presence on iTunes so students can view easily.  3 studio-quality mics to check out.

Screen flow is a program Skip uses that would enable screencasting:  http://www.telestream.net/screen-flow/overview.htm Ooo, skip said $49...I see $99 as the cost - could these be posted as "podcasts"  Does podcast mean audio or audio/video?  Does screen cast mean video/audio?

Power of podcast - keep classtime for interactions instead of lectures.  Podcast lectures could be homework.

Steppin' out - where can I go....

  • Carl - OIT:

Blackboard Quota will be increased for everybody eventually...

Early February will be alaska.edu email roll-out - students and faculty are not required yet....

**Check my settings on MAIL Michael Scott didn't know why I can't send through apple mail....sent message to OIT with screencapture of settings√

Recovery Password/username questions are based on what's in the system.  This is important to make sure that changes aren't made without your knowledge.  "Confidential" students are invisible...they need to physically go in to figure that out.  They can change on UA online so that the system can "see" them.

Wow...only 16% of UAF courses are represented on Blackboard...this is amazing.....

Google apps - uaf.edu or alaska.edu?√

Ask...I can use www.google.com/a/uaf.edu but there doesn't seem to be a www.google.com/a/alaska.edu...go to alaska.edu mail to reach alaska.edu apps (docs).

Google Calendar.....oh, my....I haven't had good luck syncing Palm and iCal.....iCal can sync to google mail so iCal can be my bridge...I think....can I go from ical to palm????  I just bought this palm centro phone!!!!! i

Blackboard

Saving the syllabus as .htm and then setting up a link to view online is a great tip!!!

20% or more the same in another document probably means plagarism.

Elluminate - I like the text box tool!

Thank you Skip, Don and Gary!!

Syncing Palm devices with Macs has always been problematic--it works, but it's not easy to set up and for some reason it seems to just stop working at some point, at which point you have to start over again. (I used a Palm device for many years.) When it DOES work, iCal and Palm calendars can be synced, and that might be a way into syncing with Google calendars.
